Alfred Sung was born in Shanghai in 1948 and grew up in Hong Kong. He studied couture at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. After graduating with honors, Sung moved to New York to study at the Parsons School of Design, a top-tier American art and design school. In 1972 he moved to Canada where he first designed for a sportswear manufacturer in Toronto. Four years later, he opened his own store called Moon. At Moon, customers could buy loose-fitting, neutral-colored fashions that refreshingly broke with the style of the day. This was just a first indication of Sung's intention to differentiate himself from the suit, an approach reflected in his unique scents.
Sung's main goal is to create clean, modern, timeless fashion that offers quality, style and value that appeal to professional and executive women. In addition to designer clothing, he has also focused on the manufacture of jewelery and Alfred Sung fragrances to complement his fashion line. Sung develops scents with a minimalist style that is still refined and balanced. Alfred Sung perfumes range in scent from the classic citrus of the original Alfred Sung perfume for hair to the delicate floral of Sha to the heavy complexity of Encore. The elegant Alfred Sung perfume for her encompasses all the style and sophistication that comes with its fashion, and it would soon be followed by an Alfred Sung cologne for men. The classic Alfred Sung cologne for men is an amalgamation of bay leaf, lemon, basil and other herbs and essences. In recent years, Alfred Sung fragrances have become increasingly sought after, and in 2000 he earned the HBA International Package Design award for one of his perfumes.
