Gianfranco Ferre, a native of Legnamo, Italy, studied architecture at Politechnico Milan. After graduation, he was a freelance jewelry designer for four years, until he launched his own label in 1974. A few years after its start, Ferre introduced fragrances for men and women, including Gieffe, Ferre and Gianfranco Ferre.
WWD dubbed him the Frank Lloyd Wright of Fashion because you can see from his designs the influence of his early discipline. Gianfranco Ferre is considered to be a minimalist and a modernist, but a closer look at his work you will see that there are many things going on, which at first glance may seem invisible, but are certainly captivating and add beauty to his work.
The subtlety and complexity of his designs add to the mystique of his work. Certainly modern and mystical at the same time. Simple at first glance, complex on closer inspection. It's not about less is more. It is about "more and apparently less" Gianfranco Ferre's creations summarize.
