In 1906, well before the launch of Gucci fragrances, Guccio Gucci founded the House of Gucci as a saddlery in Florence. As the horseless carriages became more and more prominent, Gucci instead focused on providing high-end luggage. Gucci created many of its brand staples in the early 1950s, including luggage, shoes, neckties, and its famous handbags with bamboo handles. After Guccio's death in 1953, his family focused on elevating the successful business to new heights, and one of their accomplishments would be the creation of Gucci colognes and perfumes.
In 1974, the House of Gucci introduced the world to its first perfume, Gucci No. 1 for women, which has a floral, woody scent. This original Gucci perfume for her would become a classic and initiate the creation of a full line of fragrances, including colognes. The first Gucci cologne for men was Gucci Pour Homme, launched in 1976. The popularity of Gucci fragrances continued to grow in the eighties. For women, Gucci No. 3 was released in 1985, and Nobile, a Gucci cologne for men, was launched in 1988.
In the 1990s, Tom Ford, Gucci's newest executive head, brought Gucci back to the center of the chic, and he now recommends a diverse line of products, including leather fashions, perfumes, colognes, cosmetics, and shoes (including the moccasin with the signature Gucci snaffle bit). In addition, the Flora scarf was made for Grace Kelly by Rodolfo Gucci, suitcases, watches, jewelry, silk scarves, sporting goods, belt closures (the one with the Guccio Gucci initials was introduced in 1964), neckties, and eyewear also became part of the brand.
